A bigger paycheck often feels like the obvious path to a better life. Many people assume that earning more money will bring greater satisfaction, even if it means working longer hours, spending more time commuting, or giving up personal time.

However, new research suggests that the connection between income and happiness may not be as strong as many people expect.

Researchers from the National Bureau of Economic Research conducted an experiment to understand how people estimate the impact of higher income on their overall life satisfaction.

The study explored whether people would still choose a higher-paying job after learning more about how money affects long-term happiness.

How People View Money and Happiness

At the start of the study, participants reported an average household income of about $91,010. They rated their life satisfaction at 62.1 out of 100. When asked how a 20% increase in income would affect their happiness, the average response suggested that their satisfaction would rise by 6.8 points.

Researchers then shared findings from previous studies showing that additional income often has a smaller effect on happiness than people believe. After reviewing this information, most participants lowered their estimates of how much a pay increase would improve their lives.

Research from the U.S. General Social Survey found that a 20% increase in annual income was linked to only about a 1-point increase in life satisfaction. Another 2020 study from Sweden examined lottery winners two decades after their wins and found that their increased wealth improved life satisfaction by only around 1 point.

Choosing Time Over a Higher Salary

The findings changed how many participants viewed job decisions. When given a choice between a job offering 20% higher pay with 20% more working hours and a lower-paying position with more free time, many participants chose the job with fewer hours after seeing the research data.

The same pattern appeared when participants compared higher-paying jobs with longer commutes or jobs that reduced their sleep time. The results showed that people often value personal time, convenience, and rest more than they initially realize.

A follow-up survey conducted one month later found that about one-third of participants still believed that a higher salary was not worth the sacrifice of extra work hours, longer travel time, or less sleep.

Money plays a role in creating comfort and stability, but research suggests that a bigger paycheck does not always lead to greater life satisfaction. Career decisions often involve more than salary, including work-life balance, personal time, health, and overall daily experiences.

A fulfilling life is shaped by how financial choices align with personal priorities. While income can support important goals, factors beyond money often have a stronger influence on long-term happiness and well-being.
